"Cotton and Cod" at the Brick Store Museum - Friday, June 17th, at 7 p.m. They might not sound like the most likely candidates for a musical evening, but the story of both these two industries is filled with song. Once, ships built in Kennebunk sailed to Southern ports to bring lumber and salt cod to the Caribbean, bringing home cotton from New Orleans and Mobile, along with sugar and molasses from the islands, from which was made an unbelievable amount of rum. The rum wet the whistles of the sailors as they made their journeys, and the songs they sang about what they were doing are full of life and history. Monica will share some of them, telling stories of fishing trips, slavery, piracy, life in Maine’s cotton mills, and the lives of enslaved Africans whose labor drove an economic juggernaut. Accompanying herself with guitar and banjo, and perhaps a little autoharp, Monica hopes you will join her for an enlightening and entertaining evening. This concert is presented, in part, as part of Kennebunk's Launch! Maritime Festival. Hope to see you there!
